"I had my only daughter Claire there in 1981., and was in labour from the Wednesday until the Saturday. It started badly by the ambulance crew giving me a ticking off for calling them when my husband could have taken me.I arrived there 4.00 Thursday morning to utter chaos. There was not enough staff for the babies that were being born. One woman had her baby in the bed opposite to me while she was waiting to go into the theatre. The nurse showed me the baby when they took away the curtains, I remember her saying "oh we dont have time to give you any painkillers we will just have the baby". My contractions stopped and had to walk the corridors all afternoon with my Mother in Law to get them started again.I was put on 2 machines, one monitoring me and the other attached to the baby's head inside and eventually had 3 epidurals. My husband was snoozing on chairs in the corridors and getting very stressed. His father sat by my bed for hours.
When I did get to the theatre everything I had been taught about breathing was useless I had no feeling so they told me when to push. The baby was a face presentation which meant she was facing the wrong way when born, a lot of stitching from inside and out. I was taken down stairs where I was accused by the nurses of taking out the drip as it had come loose getting me to the ward. I immediately fell asleep exhausted and they had to take baby to the nursery for a while a sin I was to pay for. When recovered they brought in food but I was unable to reach it as the beds were so worn they formed a v shape and I was numb and could not move. I buzzed for help and the nurse went mad prodding at my tummy and had to have a bed pan which they obviously did not like. Baby took a long time to feed properly and later vomited up stuff which should have been removed by turning over and patting the back by a nurse, as she had done to a woman opposite. She was ok after that. I was treated like an idiot and a nuisance and told by the same nurse to put a thermometer into the baby's bottom which I did not. I asked another nurse if I should do this and she was horrified.I learned later that I was being lined up for a Cesaerian section which in hindsight would have been better. The nurse and a doctor fought and argued over me as to how they were going to take out the tube in my back as I lay doubled up for their decision. Even though I bathed in salt water every day (which I had to provide) my stitches did not heal well not surprising as the bath and showers were absolutely filthy, although I washed the bath before using.I was in there for 10 days watching women come in, have their babies and go home. and could not walk very far when discharged. It took 3 months of pain before I healed properly. Just after 3 weeks I had to go back for a check up just for the stitches but they gave me a full internal which was so intensly painful I cannot describe.
I did not have any other children.
Glad it has gone."
